Empty-Nest: Options New devices designed to make home life more convenient, safer.

Daily Herald Walk in the room and say "lights." The lamp turns on.

When it's time to leave the room, simply say "lights" again. And off it goes.

IntelaVoice™ is a voice-operated light switch from VOS Systems Inc. Retailers and others in the industry got a look at it -- and badges with the slogan "Your Voice Turns Me On!" -- at the recent National Hardware Show in Chicago.

A bleary-eyed new parent waking a crying baby at 3 a.m. might like this product a lot.

So might an older adult who doesn't mind saving a few steps here and there.

There are all sorts of ways to make a home safer and more convenient as you get older. Put grab bars in the bathroom. Pull up the throw rugs. Add more lights.

But there are other products that might make life easier for anyone, including empty-nesters.

IntelaVoice™, for example, bills itself as a "hands-free convenience for the physically challenged, senior citizens, children or anyone who has trouble reaching wall switches or moving freely about the house." (Maybe not children - an image of little tykes running in and out of the room gleefully shouting "lights!" over and over comes to mind).

The unit plugs into a wall outlet, and has a suggested retail price of $29.95. If the outlet is behind a sofa or desk, add a microphone, LiteMic™, for $9.95.
