Poway company launches voice-activated device.

Turns lights, radios and televisions on and off.

Poway News Chieftain Poway inventor Rick Matulich was inspired when he watched a "Star Trek" rerun a few years ago in which Dr. McCoy illuminated a room just by saying "lights."

After the show, Matulich decided he would use his electrical expertise to create a device that would allow everyone to live as conveniently as the Star Trek crew. It took years of research and testing, but all the kinks have finally been worked out and stores are now selling the device, called IntelaVoice™.

"IntelaVoice™ is for anyone who has ever wished they could turn a light on when their hands were full or when they were stumbling down a dark hallway in the middle of the night," said Matulich. "Voice-activated products enable busy people (to enjoy) a freedom they've never before experienced."

IntelaVoice™, which costs less than $50, also may be used to turn on and off radios, televisions and other small appliances. Once IntelaVoice™ is plugged into any ordinary wall outlet, just plug any appliance into the device and you can turn off that appliance with your voice.

The device can recognize voices up to 20 feet away and does not react to crying babies, barking dogs or background conversations. IntelaVoice™ is equipped with a pre-programmed vocabulary so no training is required. It weighs about seven ounces and has been judged 98 percent effective in trials.

Matulich plans to invent and market additional voice-operated products that his Poway-based company, VOS Systems, plans to aggressively market. The company, which was formed by Matulich, Allan Ligi and Donald Nunn in 1995, is located on Quate Court, near the corner of Poway Road and Tarascan Drive.

Matulich said the device is most helpful for seniors and disabled people but can make life more efficient for anyone.

IntelaVoice™ was named the 1998 "Best Consumer Product of the Year" by the American Voice Input/Output Society, which judges products that use speech recognition.
